Lismore Castle stands in the town of Lismore, County Waterford, Ireland, on a site first fortified in 1185. Originally held by the Earls of Desmond and later the Earls of Cork, the castle passed to the Cavendish family in 1753 and remains the Irish seat of the Duke of Devonshire. The structure was substantially rebuilt twice during the 16th century before undergoing major Victorian-era reconstruction in the mid-nineteenth century for the 6th Duke of Devonshire, who gave it its dominant Gothic style. Today it functions as both a private residence and an art museum and gallery.
