Platamon Castle is a Crusader fortress built between 1204 and 1222 in Macedonia, Greece, located southeast of Mount Olympus in the Dion-Olympos Municipality. Strategically positioned to command the exit of the Tempe valley—a crucial passage connecting Macedonia with Thessaly and southern Greece—the castle features an imposing medieval tower, or donjon, that overlooks the main road. Archaeological investigations have uncovered remains of Hellenistic walls and a gate within the donjon's fortification, leading scholars to identify the site as the location of the ancient Greek city Herakleion, though the city's core remains undiscovered. Recent excavations on the northwest side of the castle's hill have yielded shells and coins suggesting settlement in that area. Today the castle is designated as an archaeological site in Greece.
