The Temple of Poseidon at Tainaron stood at the southernmost tip of the Mani Peninsula on the Peloponnese, dedicated to Poseidon Asphaleius—"Poseidon of Safety." This ancient Greek sanctuary served not only as a religious center but also as a recruitment hub for mercenaries and possibly as an asylum for runaway Greek slaves. Located at Cape Matapan, the site occupies the second-southernmost point of mainland Europe, a position that underscored its significance in antiquity as both a sacred precinct and a refuge from persecution.
