Perched on Cape Sounion in Lavreotiki Municipality, Greece, the Temple of Poseidon is an ancient Greek sanctuary dedicated to the god of the sea, built around 700 BC in the Doric order and constructed of marble. Though evidence of earlier sanctuaries on the cape dates back to the 11th century BC, this temple represents the classical phase of the site's religious significance. The material and scale of votive offerings found there suggest it attracted members of Athens's elite and aristocratic classes, reflecting Poseidon's particular importance to a maritime city whose naval power and trade networks were essential to its survival and prosperity during the Classical period.
