Potsdamer Platz is a major public square and traffic intersection in central Berlin, located roughly one kilometre south of the Brandenburg Gate and Reichstag. Named after the nearby city of Potsdam and historically marking the route of the old Potsdam Gate through Berlin's city wall, the square evolved from a site of military drills in its early years into Europe's busiest traffic intersection by the early twentieth century. The area was obliterated during World War II and subsequently abandoned during the Cold War, bisected by the Berlin Wall. Following German reunification in 1990, the square underwent comprehensive redevelopment in the 1990s and early 2000s under architect Renzo Piano, transforming it into a vibrant commercial and cultural centre featuring corporate offices, retail spaces, restaurants, cinemas, and hotels.
