Bebelplatz is a Rococo square in Berlin's Mitte district, designed beginning in 1740 by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff, Peter Joseph Lenné, and Eduard Fürstenau. Located on the south side of the Unter den Linden, one of the city's principal east-west avenues, the square comprises a green area to the east and an open plaza to the west, arranged around the State Opera building. The square is framed by significant eighteenth-century monuments: the Prinzessinnenpalais to the east, the Alte Bibliothek and Old Palace to the west, and St. Hedwig's Cathedral—Prussia's first Catholic church built after the Reformation—to the southeast. Originally known as the Opernplatz, it was renamed after World War II in honor of August Bebel, a nineteenth-century founder of the Social Democratic Party of Germany.
