The Staatsoper Unter den Linden, located on Berlin's historic Unter den Linden boulevard, is a Palladian opera house designed by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff and built between 1741 and 1743 by order of Prussian king Frederick the Great. Originally known as the Königliche Oper or Berlin Court Opera, it holds the distinction of being the world's oldest state opera and the first theater to stand as an independent monumental building in an urban setting. Severely damaged during Allied bombing in World War II, the structure was rebuilt from 1951 to 1955 as a centerpiece of the Forum Fridericianum square in East Berlin, where it remains a listed architectural heritage monument.
