Built in 1862 as a temporary venue for Czech drama and opera, the Provisional Theatre in Prague was designed by architect Vojtěch Ignác Ullmann. Opening on 18 November 1862, it served for two decades as a cultural stopgap until a permanent National Theatre could be constructed, hosting over 5,000 performances during its twenty-year tenure. Between 1866 and 1876, the theatre became a crucial venue for Czech operatic life, staging the premieres of four operas by Bedřich Smetana, among them the celebrated *The Bartered Bride*. Rather than being demolished, the Provisional Theatre's structure was eventually absorbed into the new National Theatre, which opened on 11 June 1881, transforming this modest interim building into a foundational component of one of Prague's most important cultural institutions.
