The R & S Building stands at the southeast corner of First Avenue and East 29th Street in Manhattan's Kips Bay neighborhood. Designed by McKim, Mead & White in 1903 as part of a master plan for Bellevue Hospital, this Renaissance Revival structure originally served as the hospital's pathological building and male staff dormitory. The building later housed the city's Office of Chief Medical Examiner until 1961. After decades of vacancy from the late 1970s through the late 1990s, during which it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, the structure underwent renovation around 2000 and now operates as the Nicholas Scoppetta Children's Center, an intake facility for children entering foster care.
