The Railway Exchange Building is a 21-story, 277-foot high-rise in downtown St. Louis completed in 1914 and designed by the architectural firm Mauran, Russell & Crowell. Built as a steel-frame structure in the Chicago School style, it was the city's tallest building upon opening and remains the second-largest by interior floor area downtown, with nearly 1.2 million square feet of space. The building long housed the flagship store and headquarters of May Department Stores' Famous-Barr chain until the brand's acquisition by Macy's in 2006; the store closed in 2013. The vacant structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
