Readbourne, a five-part Georgian brick house on the Chester River in Centreville, Queen Anne's County, Maryland, exemplifies the evolution of colonial domestic architecture over two centuries. Built initially in the early 1730s by James Hollyday, a prominent provincial politician, the central block forms a T-shaped, two-story structure measuring 60 by 23.5 feet with a hip roof and walls laid in Flemish bond. A south wing was added in 1791, and a north wing completed in 1948, though the original central section remains the most architecturally significant. The house later passed into the ownership of William Fahnestock Jr. of the prominent New York banking family and was recognized for its historical importance when listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
