Roskilde Cathedral, the official royal burial church of Denmark located in Roskilde on the island of Zealand, stands as one of Scandinavia's earliest and most influential Brick Gothic structures. Founded in 1201 under the direction of Absalon, the cathedral was constructed over the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, blending Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles in brick—a material choice that proved transformative for Northern European architecture. Since the fifteenth century, it has served as the principal burial site for Danish monarchs, leading to centuries of extensions and additions that created numerous burial chapels reflecting evolving architectural fashions. This accumulated layering of styles across eight hundred years of European design, combined with its pioneering role in spreading Brick Gothic throughout the North, earned the cathedral its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. Today it remains a working church, welcoming over 165,000 annual visitors and hosting regular concerts.
