The Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery in Exeter is the largest museum in the city, housed in a Venetian Gothic Revival structure built in 1868 from local Heavitree stone. Founded that same year, the institution holds over one million objects spanning zoology, anthropology, fine art, and both local and foreign archaeology and geology, though only a small percentage remain on permanent public display. The building, Grade II listed, has undergone multiple extensions throughout its history and received a major redevelopment between 2007 and 2011, costing £24 million, before reopening on 15 December 2011. The museum is designated a National Portfolio Organisation under Arts Council England's strategic investment programme.
