Runkelstein Castle (Castel Roncolo in Italian) is a medieval fortification perched on a rocky spur near Bolzano in the Ritten territory of South Tyrol, Italy. Founded in 1237 when Alderich, Prince-Bishop of Trent, granted the brothers Friedrich and Beral, Lords of Wangen, permission to build on the rock then known as Runchenstayn, the castle remains a landmark of medieval Alpine architecture. Today it functions as both a private museum and historical park museum, and is recognized as a cultural heritage monument in South Tyrol and Italian national heritage.
