Completed in 1905, Sacred Heart Catholic Church stands at 509 North Florida Avenue in downtown Tampa, Florida, and represents one of the city's oldest ecclesiastical structures. Designed by the prolific Texas architect Nicholas J. Clayton, the church is predominantly Romanesque in style, featuring a striking 135-foot dome and a sophisticated material palette of granite and marble. The interior showcases solid oak furnishings, a Carrara marble altar, porcelain tiles, and seventy stained glass windows manufactured by the renowned Munich firm Franz Mayer & Company. The parish itself has deeper roots, tracing back to 1860 when the first Catholic congregation on Florida's West Coast was established; the Jesuits assumed pastoral care following the yellow fever epidemic of 1888. The current structure replaced an earlier wooden-frame church on the same site, with construction beginning in 1898 and the cornerstone laid in 1900. Since its dedication, the church has become a favored venue for weddings among multigenerational parish families.
