Saint Sophia Church, located in Sofia's Oborishte District, is one of Bulgaria's oldest churches, built as an Early Christian basilica in the fourth century and constructed of brick in the Byzantine architectural tradition. The structure was converted to a mosque during the sixteenth century before being restored to its function as an Orthodox church during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The church's prominence in Sofia's history is underscored by the city itself being renamed after it in 1329, when the medieval town of Serdica adopted the name Sofia, derived from the church's dedication to Holy Wisdom.
