Santa Caterina d'Alessandria is a Roman Catholic church in Palermo's historic Kalsa quarter, begun in 1566 and built in the Sicilian Baroque style. Its main facade fronts Piazza Bellini, with a lateral Western facade overlooking the ornate Fontana Pretoria. Positioned at a nexus of medieval and early modern religious architecture—across the piazza stand the Norman-era San Cataldo and Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio, while the Theatine church of San Giuseppe faces it across Piazza Pretoria—Santa Caterina reflects centuries of architectural refinement. Though refurbished repeatedly, the church preserves layers of aesthetic influence spanning the Renaissance, Baroque, and late-Baroque Rococo periods, creating a palimpsest of Sicily's evolving architectural tastes.
