Schloss Hof is a Baroque palace in Marchfeld, Austria, near the Slovak border, whose present form reflects the ambitions of two of the realm's most powerful figures. Originally built in the 1620s, it was acquired by Prince Eugene of Savoy in 1725 and enlarged by architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt beginning in 1729 as an elaborate hunting lodge. After Eugene's death, Empress Maria Theresa purchased the estate in 1755, and from 1773 to 1775 Franz Anton Hillebrandt undertook a major conversion and expansion that gave the castle its distinctive appearance. The palace served as temporary home to the Imperial and Royal Naval Academy during World War I before the institution relocated. Today it functions as a museum, with its Baroque gardens reconstructed to their historical design by 2019.
