Scholz Garten, a beer garden and restaurant in downtown Austin, Texas, was established in 1866 by German immigrant August Scholz on a lot he purchased in 1862. Built in the Chicago School architectural style, it became a cultural hub for German immigrants in the capital city. The venue was purchased by the Austin Saengerrunde in 1914, who continue to own it today. In 1908, the organization added a new hall behind the garden featuring a six-lane bowling alley, which remains one of the oldest continuously operating centers in the United States. Though closed during Prohibition, Scholz Garten reopened and endures as a popular gathering place for political discussion and University of Texas sports events. Recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark in 1967 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, the venue was restored in 1987 by new lessees and stands as one of Texas's oldest operating businesses.
