Senate Square in central Helsinki presents Carl Ludvig Engel's neoclassical architecture as a unique allegorical composition of political, religious, scientific, and commercial powers. Designed by Johan Albrecht Ehrenström and Engel, the square and its surroundings form the oldest part of central Helsinki's core. The ensemble is anchored by the Helsinki Cathedral and includes the Government Palace, the main building of the University of Helsinki, and the Sederholm House—the oldest building of central Helsinki, dating from 1757—which once belonged to merchant Johan Sederholm. Together, these landmark structures embody the social and institutional foundations of Helsinki's historical center.
