Completed in 1892 on Lagos Island, the Shitta-Bey Mosque stands as one of Southern Nigeria's oldest mosques and the country's first internationally recognized mosque. Designed by João Batista da Costa in Islamic architectural style, it was founded by Mohammed Shitta Bey, a Sierra Leonean-born Nigerian aristocrat, philanthropist, and businessman who lent his name to the structure. Located on Martins Ereko Street, the mosque has served both as a place of worship and a religious learning centre, and was designated a National Monument by Nigeria's Commission for Museums and Monuments in 2013, reflecting its status as one of the nation's most significant historical legacies.
