Sonnenstein Castle, located in Pirna near Dresden, Germany, is a château that took on a tragic institutional role in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. From 1811 onward, it housed a mental hospital that operated continuously until the end of World War II. During the Nazi era, the facility became one of the extermination centers for Aktion T4, the systematic program targeting individuals with mental and physical disabilities. The castle was shut down following Germany's defeat in 1945 and remained closed until its reopening in 1970.
