Southern Cross station, located in Docklands at the western edge of Melbourne's central business district, is a major railway terminus designed by architect Nicholas Grimshaw in postmodern style. Known as Spencer Street station until 2005, it sits on Spencer Street between Collins and La Trobe streets and serves as the hub for Victoria's regional rail network operated by V/Line, as well as interstate services to Adelaide and Sydney. The station also handles metropolitan services connecting to Flinders Street and the City Loop, making it the second-busiest station in Melbourne's network, with nearly 14 million metropolitan passengers recorded in 2023–24. Below the adjacent Spencer Outlet shopping complex lies a coach terminal serving airport shuttle services and interstate coach operators, further consolidating the station's role as a crucial transport interchange.
