The Springer Opera House, located at 103 Tenth Street in downtown Columbus, Georgia, opened on February 21, 1871, as a venue for theatrical performance. During its early decades, the theater welcomed renowned artists including Edwin Booth, Lily Langtry, Oscar Wilde, Will Rogers, Ethel Barrymore, Agnes de Mille, and John Philip Sousa. In 1971, on the occasion of its centennial season, Governor Jimmy Carter designated it the State Theatre of Georgia—a title formalized permanently by the Georgia General Assembly in 1992. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and earned recognition as a National Historic Landmark in 1978.
