St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, located in Edinburgh's West End, is the mother church of the Scottish Episcopal Church's Edinburgh diocese and seat of the Bishop of Edinburgh. Designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in Victorian Gothic Revival style, the cathedral's foundation stone was laid in 1874 and the building was consecrated in 1879. Its most distinctive feature is its trio of spires—a rare architectural element shared by only two other cathedrals in the United Kingdom. The main spire rises 90 metres, making St Mary's the tallest building in the Edinburgh urban area, while the two western spires, named "Barbara" and "Mary," were completed in 1917. The Chapter House was added in 1880. A Category A listed building, it forms part of Edinburgh's Old Town and New Town World Heritage Site.
