Located in Glacier County, the St. Mary Utility Area Historic District is a support complex for Glacier National Park comprising employee housing and maintenance structures built largely between 1933 and 1941 by Civilian Conservation Corps workers. Constructed in the National Park Service Rustic style, the district includes maintenance buildings, an oil house, a dormitory, and barns, positioned strategically near the newly completed Going-to-the-Sun Road to serve administrative functions previously centered at East Glacier Ranger Station. A ranger station had occupied the site since 1913, and a mess hall was added by 1925; the district's expansion coincided with the road's completion in 1933 and the park's need for expanded facilities to complement its western administrative headquarters. Surrounding Mission 66-era residences and later construction lie outside the historic district boundaries.
