Located in Glacier County within Glacier National Park, the Swiftcurrent Auto Camp Historic District preserves a cluster of National Park Service rustic structures that represents the park's second phase of tourist development. Built by the Glacier Park Hotel Company—a subsidiary of the Great Northern Railway—the camp emerged in response to the arrival of automobile tourists drawn by the Going-to-the-Sun Road, contrasting with the railroad's earlier hotel concessions like the nearby Many Glacier Hotel. At its core stands a rustic general store constructed in 1935, surrounded by log tourist cabins and supporting structures including a shower and laundry house. Intentionally sited among mature trees that obscured views of surrounding mountains, the modest auto camp offered inexpensive, informal accommodations as an alternative to the grand hotels that had previously dominated park tourism.
