Located in Glacier National Park in Flathead County, the Upper Lake McDonald Ranger Station Historic District exemplifies the National Park Service Rustic architectural style favored for western park structures. Once an isolated site, the compound became an administrative center following the opening of the Going-to-the-Sun Road. The historic district comprises multiple structures—a ranger station cabin, woodshed, boathouse, garage, cabin, fire cache, and pumphouse—typifying park infrastructure of its era. The ranger station design parallels contemporary facilities at Belly River, Sherburne, and Polebridge. The boathouse was destroyed in the Howe Ridge Fire of 2018, leaving only its foundation, though the ranger station and other buildings survived the fire.
