St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral stands on Second Avenue in Manhattan's Murray Hill neighborhood, between East 34th and 35th streets. Designed by Rafael Israelyan and consecrated in 1968, it was the first cathedral of the Armenian Apostolic Church built in North America. The structure deliberately echoes the Saint Hripsime Church in Etchmiadzin, drawing on traditional Armenian architectural forms. An adjacent Armenian cultural center and diocesan house complement the cathedral, which serves as headquarters for the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America.
