Designed by Franz Michael Reiffenstuel and opened in 1865, the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz is Munich's second major theatre, situated on an urban square in the Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt borough. Originally focused on operetta, the opera house has expanded its repertoire in recent decades to include opera, musicals, and ballet. One of Germany's most active theatres, it maintains an ambitious season running from September to July with over 200 performances annually, drawing comparison to Berlin's Komische Oper and London's English National Opera. The building holds status as an architectural heritage monument in Bavaria.
