The Stari Most, or Old Bridge, is a 16th-century Ottoman stone arch bridge spanning the Neretva River in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent in 1557 and designed by Mimar Hayruddin, a student of the renowned architect Mimar Sinan, the bridge stands 24 meters high and represents an exemplary work of Balkan Islamic architecture. Built from marble and limestone, it once connected the two halves of the city, whose name derives from the mostari—bridge keepers who maintained the structure during Ottoman rule. The bridge was destroyed during the Croat–Bosniak War in 1993 but was subsequently reconstructed and reopened in 2004. It is designated a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
