Located at 2944 South Michigan Avenue in Chicago, the Sydney Kent House is a Queen Anne style residence designed in 1883 by the prominent architectural firm Burnham and Root for client Sidney A. Kent. The house later became the home of barbed-wire industrialist John Warne Gates, known colloquially as "Bet-a-Million" Gates for his notorious gambling habits, who occupied it from 1896 to 1906. In the early twentieth century, the building served as the main structure for what is now National-Louis University. Recognized for its architectural and historical significance, the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 and designated a Chicago Landmark in 1987.
