The Tampere Theatre, one of Finland's principal active theatres, occupies a prominent position in central Tampere on the shore of the Tammerkoski, directly opposite the municipality hall. Designed by architects Kauno Kallio and Oiva Kallio, the building was begun in 1904 and opened in 1913 in the National Romantic architectural style. The theatre shares Tampere's theatrical scene with the Tampere Workers' Theatre and operates a secondary venue, the Frenckell Hall, housed in a historic brick structure in the nearby Frenckell quarter, also along the Tammerkoski waterfront. The building is protected under the city plan as a heritage site.
