The Tancredo Neves Pantheon of Fatherland and Freedom is a modernist cenotaph designed by Oscar Niemeyer and located in Brasília's Praça dos Três Poderes. Conceived in the aftermath of president-elect Tancredo Neves's death in 1985—marking the end of two decades of military rule—the building symbolizes a dove in its form. Completed in 1986, it spans three floors and covers 2,105 square meters but contains no tombs, distinguishing it from traditional national pantheons. The foundation stone was laid by French President François Mitterrand in October 1985. The structure houses the Livro de Aço (Book of Steel), a metal register of national heroes displayed on the third floor alongside a sculptural panel honoring eighteenth-century Minas Gerais rebels and stained glass by Marianne Peretti. An exhibition dedicated to Tancredo Neves, reopened in 2013, features documentary films and interactive displays. The building is listed as a heritage asset by IPHAN, Brazil's heritage protection agency.
