Perched dramatically on a basalt plateau above the Vorotan River gorge in southeastern Armenia's Syunik Province, Tatev Monastery is a 9th-century Armenian Apostolic ensemble that served as the bishopric seat of the region and a major center of economic, political, spiritual, and cultural life. Ranked among Armenia's two most celebrated monasteries, Tatev gained particular renown in the 14th and 15th centuries when it housed the University of Tatev, a significant medieval scholarly institution that advanced science, religion, and philosophy while fostering Armenian book reproduction and miniature painting during a turbulent period for Armenian culture. The monastery complex remains a symbol of Armenian architectural and intellectual heritage, now accessible by the Wings of Tatev aerial tramway, opened in 2010 and recognized as the world's longest non-stop double-track cable car.
