Located in Mahón, the capital of Menorca, the Teatre Principal de Maó is one of Spain's oldest opera houses. Built in 1829 to designs by Italian architect Giovanni Palagi, it opened on December 15 of that year following 18th-century Italian opera house standards. The theatre remains a cultural cornerstone of the island, hosting an annual Opera Week that features celebrated singers performing the bel canto repertoire.
