Teatru Manoel, located on Old Theatre Street in Valletta, Malta, is Europe's third-oldest working theatre, commissioned by Grand Master Fra António Manoel de Vilhena in 1731. Originally named the Teatro Pubblico, it was redesignated Theatre Royal in 1812 and took its present name in 1866. Built in the *Teatri all'italiana* style then current, the intimate 534-seat venue features an oval auditorium with three tiers of wooden boxes adorned in gold leaf and a pale blue trompe-l'œil ceiling designed to evoke a rounded cupola. It remains Malta's national theatre and home to the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, distinguished as the oldest theatre still in operation throughout the Commonwealth of Nations.
