Designed by English architect Edward Middleton Barry and completed in 1866, the Royal Opera House stood as one of Valletta's most striking performing arts venues. The theatre endured considerable challenges: a devastating fire in 1873 damaged its interior, though restoration was completed by 1877. The building suffered far more catastrophically during World War II, when it sustained a direct aerial bombardment in 1942. After decades of abandoned reconstruction proposals, Italian architect Renzo Piano undertook a redesign of the ruins, and in 2013 the venue reopened as Pjazza Teatru Rjal, restoring performance programming to the historic site.
