The Teatro Real in Madrid stands at the Plaza de Oriente opposite the Royal Palace, serving as Spain's leading institution for opera and musical performance. Designed by Custodio Teodoro Moreno and Antonio López Aguado, construction began on 23 April 1818 under King Ferdinand VII and the opera house formally opened on 19 November 1850 when Queen Isabella II inaugurated it. After closing in 1925 due to structural damage, it reopened in 1966 as a symphonic venue before undergoing comprehensive renovation from 1991 onward, finally resuming full opera operations on 11 October 1997. The building encompasses 78,210 square meters with a seating capacity of 1,958 and is recognized as one of Europe's most prestigious opera houses. Designated a *bien de interés cultural* in 1993, it has hosted major cultural events including the 1969 Eurovision Song Contest and regularly presents opera, dance, concerts, and recitals under the management of a public foundation established in 1995.
