The Teatro Nacional de São Carlos is an opera house in Lisbon's Chiado district, designed by José da Costa e Silva and opened on June 30, 1793, by Queen Maria I. Built as a replacement for the Tejo Opera House, destroyed in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, the theatre stands as a testament to the city's cultural recovery in the late eighteenth century. With a seating capacity of 844, it remains a functioning venue in Portugal's historical center and is designated a National Monument.
