The Teatro di San Carlo in Naples is the world's oldest continuously active opera house, opened in 1737 by architects Angelo Carasale and Giovanni Antonio Medrano under Bourbon royal patronage. Connected to the Royal Palace and facing the Piazza del Plebiscito, it predates both Milan's La Scala and Venice's La Fenice by decades. Originally holding 3,285 seats, the theatre now accommodates 1,386 patrons and remains a model that influenced European theatre design. Its opera season runs from late November to July, complemented by a ballet season from December to early June, and it holds the status of Italian national heritage.
