Located in the San Cassiano parish of Venice's Santa Croce district near the Rialto, the Teatro San Cassiano holds the distinction of being the world's first public opera house. Inaugurated in 1637 and owned by the Venetian Tron family, it pioneered the commercial staging of opera before a paying audience—a revolutionary departure from the aristocratic and court-based opera performances that had preceded it. Until then, public theatres operating on a commercial basis had presented only spoken theatrical works, leaving opera as an exclusive spectacle for the nobility. The Teatro San Cassiano's opening thus democratized the art form and established opera as a viable public entertainment. Construction of the theatre dates back to at least 1581. In 2019, a reconstruction project was announced by English entrepreneur and musicologist Paul Atkin, designed to recreate the 1637 theatre as accurately as academic research and traditional craftsmanship would permit, complete with period stage machinery and moving sets, positioning it as a centre for historically informed Baroque opera.
