Inaugurated by Shahbanu Farah Pahlavi in 1977, just two years before Iran's revolution, the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art stands as one of the country's largest art institutions. Designed by architect Kamran Diba in the Pahlavi and brutalist idioms, the museum was constructed in stone and concrete and designated an Iranian National Heritage site. Its holdings exceed 3,000 works, encompassing 19th and 20th-century European and American paintings, prints, drawings, and sculptures alongside a major collection of Iranian modern and contemporary art. The museum is widely regarded as home to the most valuable assemblage of modern Western masterpieces housed outside Europe and North America.
