The Kirk was Mason City's first luxury apartment building, completed in 1903 by local businessman, photographer, and civic leader Horace P. Kirk. This Victorian-era structure featured an eclectic design that balanced horizontal and vertical elements—wide brick floor bands provided horizontality, while copper-clad oriel windows spanning the second and third floors created vertical emphasis toward the cornice. Built partly on the site of earlier Kirk properties destroyed by fire in 1902, the building incorporated stone foundation and wall elements from an 1892 wholesale building that had occupied the lot. Originally self-sufficient with its own steam generating plant supplying heat, light, and water, The Kirk later connected to city utilities. Listed individually on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and as a contributing property in the Mason City Downtown Historic District in 2005, the building was destroyed by fire on April 24, 2023.
