The Lowry, a theatre and gallery complex that opened in 2000 at Salford Quays in Greater Manchester, combines performance and visual arts spaces in a high-tech architectural design by Michael Wilford. Named after the early 20th-century painter L. S. Lowry, celebrated for his depictions of industrial scenes across North West England, the building was officially inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II on 12 October 2000.
