Situated in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C., The Phillips Collection is an art museum founded in 1921 by collectors Duncan Phillips and Marjorie Acker Phillips as the Phillips Memorial Gallery. Housed in a Georgian-style building, the museum was established by Phillips, grandson of banker and Jones and Laughlin Steel Company co-founder James H. Laughlin. The collection spans European and American modernism, featuring works by Renoir, Courbet, El Greco, van Gogh, Matisse, Monet, Picasso, Braque, Bonnard, Klee, Dove, Homer, Whistler, Lawrence, O'Keeffe, Rothko, and many others, reflecting the founders' pursuit of art appreciation as a civic pursuit.
