The Shard, designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, is a 95-storey mixed-use pyramid-shaped skyscraper that stands 309.6 metres high in Southwark, London, making it the tallest building in the United Kingdom and Western Europe. Completed in 2012, the neo-futuristic structure combines glass, steel, and concrete in a distinctive high-tech aesthetic, with 72 habitable floors topped by a public viewing gallery and open-air observation deck at 244 metres. The tower replaced Southwark Towers on the site and is jointly owned by Sellar Property Group and the State of Qatar as part of The Shard Quarter development. Its observation deck, The View from The Shard, opened to the public in February 2013.
