The Tour Barberousse, sole surviving tower of a castle in the coastal village of Gruissan in France's Aude département, dates to the late 10th century, when it was erected on a steep, rocky hill to monitor the approaches to Narbonne's harbour and defend against maritime incursions. In the 12th century, Archbishop Guillaume de Broa enlarged the fortification, but Richelieu's orders led to its dismantling in the 16th century, leaving it to decay. Today the village has grown around the ruins, which command a panoramic view across Gruissan and the surrounding coast. The tower and castle remains are registered as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture.
