Situated in Burgundy near Mellecey, about 11 kilometres west of Chalon-sur-Saône, the Château de Germolles stands as the best-preserved residence of the Dukes of Burgundy. Built from 1385 by architect Drouet de Dammartin, this Gothic castle represents a rare survivor of 14th- and early 15th-century princely architecture in France, when most such palatial residences have largely vanished. The château's exceptional preservation makes it an invaluable document of courtly life on the eve of the Renaissance. Designated a monument historique in 1989 and awarded the Maisons des Illustres distinction, it remains privately owned but welcomes visitors through guided tours throughout much of the year.
