The Triplicane Big Mosque, also known as the Wallajah Mosque, stands on Triplicane High Road in Chennai's Triplicane neighbourhood. Built in Mughal style and completed in 1795 by the family of Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah, Nawab of Arcot, it ranks among the city's largest and oldest mosques. The entire structure is constructed of granite without iron or wood, and comprises a large prayer hall, a tank, and an expansive courtyard. A Persian chronogram by Raja Makhhan Lal Bahdur Khirat, a Hindu administrator of the Nawab, adorns the prayer hall entrance—a testament to the religious pluralism of its founding. The mosque remains active and is administered by the Prince of Arcot Endowments Trust, with a predominantly Hindu administrative staff, exemplifying sustained interfaith cooperation.
